This listing would give cougars more protections and considerations when developments, road or infrastructure projects are contemplated. The Southern California sub-species of mountain lion may get extra protections from the state. The populations are at risk of extinction due to habitat fragmentation, lack of breeding partners, wildlife-vehicle collisions, depredation permits, and loss of habitat. A review period will be opened if the State Fish and Game Commission decides to formally grant our local cougars protected status. View the Los Angeles Times article.
We were saddened to see that a three year old was attacked by a mountain lion in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park this weekend. This is a solid reminder that we have eye-witness accounts of a cougar in Chino Hills State Park. Please educate yourself on how to respond to wildlife encounters and how to remain safe.
