The Habitat Authority manages nearly 4,000 acres of protected open space west of Harbor Boulevard. When Harbor Blvd. was widened and straightened in the early 1990s, collisions with migrating wildlife soared. With the wider road, wildlife needed to dash across four lanes of traffic, not two and those vehicles were now going 60 miles per hour, not 30.

In the early 2000’s, with the advent of our understanding of the need for safe passages for wildlife, the Habitat Authority partnered with L.A. County Public Works, Cal Trans, and the Department of Parks and Recreation to build a tunnel to reduce collisions and enhance connectivity. All kinds of wildlife found it within weeks. It is the first passageway in L.A. County built solely for wildlife. Happy 20th birthday Harbor Undercrossing – a tunnel of life.
