Sycamores — these large shade giving trees grow in canyon bottoms, making use of water in streams. This tree changes its color in the fall and loses its leaves in winter. By growing branches close to the ground and laying down a blanket of leaves they protect their own root system. Sycamores are found throughout the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor.

It is sad to see that the public got in the way of the fire agencies for the recent Chino Hills Star Fire hampering efforts to contain the fire. Please don’t risk other homes or lives because you want a good photo. The risks can be catastrophic. The state bird of California is the quail. It has a distinctive plume and lives in groups known as coveys. They hunt by foraging seeds and leaves on the ground. They also nest on the ground in shallow depressions lined with leaves. If disturbed, they may burst into a low flight.
