California Quail
He’s a good looking bird… and California’s state bird at that. Quail are found throughout the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor. Their call sounds like the word: “Chicago.” Have you seen or heard them before?

The state bird of California is the quail. It has a distinctive plume and lives in groups known as coveys. They hunt by foraging seeds and leaves on the ground. They also nest on the ground in shallow depressions lined with leaves. If disturbed, they may burst into a low flight.
Dads are the best, right? Sometimes they stand guard from a high perch to watch over the little ones. This California Quail was photographed last weekend and we were busy celebrating, so we are a smidge late for a Happy Father’s Day post, but better late than never!
