Just like we’ve done one acre at a time with Chino Hills State Park, the Mojave Desert Land Trust is doing the same thing in the desert. We’d like to give a shout out to our long-time friend, Geary Hund, for his work through California State Parks protecting Coal Canyon Wildlife Corridor in the late 1990s/early 2000s. One measure of the remaining wildness of our region is the presence of golden eagles. With a wing span of up to 7.5 feet, the dark brown bird with the golden sheen can fly up to 200 MPH. They perform swooping aerial gymnastics during courtship and play. Golden eagles are majestic birds.
Happy 4th of July! While we may not be celebrating in the usual way, remember fireworks can ignite dry brush and cause large wildfires! Of course we all should celebrate the 4th of July, but we must do so safely. The COVID pandemic has been very challenging. Imagine how much worse it could be if a fire burned your home down too. As a reminder, fireworks are illegal in all communities surrounding the hills. Please promptly report any use of fireworks in the following cities.
