As the Santa Ana winds return to our area this fall season, we are reminded of their devastating effect 10 years ago when the winds drove the Freeway Complex Fire to burn over 30,000 acres in four counties. In addition, over 280 homes were damaged or destroyed and 95% of Chino Hills State Park burned. Report Reveals Human Error in Fire Response

  Interesting that multiple calls reporting the fire were dismissed. The same thing happened with the Freeway Complex Fire when area residents reported a second fire in Brea (not Corona). We hope the Orange County Fire Authority and California Highway Patrol train their personnel to respond according to protocol, so this doesn’t happen again. And, that they track red flag days better than they did for this fire. Check out the Orange County Register article.

No Surprise, People Start Fires in Fire Prone Areas

Guess what? Those very high fire hazard severity zones (you know, the places most likely to burn) are where the fastest residential development is occurring in Southern California. And, interestingly–according to this new study–people in those zones are most likely to start the fires there. Let’s hope the lessons of the Freeway Complex Fire, Canyon 2 Fire, and other statewide disasters bring home the realities of how dangerous it is to build in these areas. Read the KPPC article.
