Here’s another interesting Plant Adaptation for our SoCal habitats. The prickly pear cactus is a succulent, meaning it stores a lot of water. It is also considered fire adapted. The spines are the leaves and provide shade to the cactus. Without the spines, the cactus can overheat, get sunburned, and wither.
Did you know that chaparral is a shrubland habitat found in every county in California? Yep! It is especially found in foothill elevations and is adapted to hotter and drier summers with wetter winters. Many shrubs have evolved to have small tough leaves to reduce water loss.
