Local Cougars at Risk

A lot of attention is now being paid to the Santa Ana Mountains and its highest predator: the cougar. Check out this article from a few weeks ago on the effort to list this “genetically distinct” population which is facing extinction without additional protections. Hills For Everyone connected the Santa Ana Mountains to Chino Hills State Park in the late 1990s, but more work is needed at the southern end of the Santa Anas. Read the Los Angeles Times article.

Coast Live Oaks

Fun Facts about Coast Live Oaks: These large evergreen trees have a short trunk with numerous large, crooked, spreading branches. They can also be wider than they are tall. The fact that oaks have crooked spreading branches in part saved them from being harvested because builders like long straight wood.

Mountain Lion Advocacy

Our friends at the Mountain Lion Foundation have partnered with Center for Biological Diversity with the aim to list the cougars in the Santa Ana Mountains as threatened under the California Endangered Species Act. This population is genetically different than other cougars in California and their very existence is threatened by habitat loss and limited wildlife corridors.
