Hills For Everyone opposes proposed National Park Service budget cuts and the selling off of our public lands to the highest bidder. Our parks and our natural heritage are our most prized and sacred places. America’s National Parks were once considered our best idea. What happened?
As part of the budget process, Congress allocates funding for different agencies. Last night, in the middle of the night, legislation was introduced. The Department of the Interior, which oversees the National Park Service, is facing even more devastating cuts.
In the 109 year history of the National Park Service, these cuts are the most severe. The current Congressional budget functionally dismantles the keepers of our most precious lands—our beloved National Parks.
The legislation proposes more than a billion dollars in cuts to the National Park Service and the removal of park sites. First in line for sale involve parks in Utah and Nevada. Estimates include 11,000 acres up to 500,000 acres to be sold off to private parties.
Parks generate $55 billion into the local economies nationwide. From hotels and restaurants to souvenir shops to local gear shops, gateway towns will be hit hard. Why would you eliminate a revenue generator like our National Parks?
While no California National Parks are on the chopping block yet, Hills For Everyone opposes all public land sell offs. This move, to sell off public lands, would be precedent setting.
Thanks to Rep. Huffman, Min, Brownley, and Rivas for standing up (literally in the middle of the night) against this atrocity.
Urge lawmakers to protect and invest in our National Park Service!
Our National Parks are on the chopping block. Speak up now!
If you care about public lands, call or email your federal elected officials. Tell them to defend public lands, fund the National Park Service, and protect our parks.
