Lands at Risk:  Hsi Lai Temple Expansion

LOCATION
Thirty two acres across Hacienda Blvd. have been purchased by The Hsi Lai Temple (World Headquarters for Buddha's Light International Association). Click the link to view photos of the Hsi Lai Temple.

JURISDICTION
The Hsi Lai Temple is located in Hacienda Heights – unincorporated Los Angeles County.   Follow this link to view a map of the Hsi Lai Temple project.

STATUS
Proposals for development have been quiet for several years now. But, several years ago representatives of the Temple met with the Land Development Coordinating Center at the Los Angeles County Regional Planning to review a proposed project on Draper Road. This development as initially proposed would consist of a cultural center, school, library, museum, auditorium, parking structure, and dormitory. Representatives of the Temple have indicated that the cultural center would have seating for 1000 and would additionally operate as a community center. There is also a proposed bridge across Hacienda Blvd. to connect to temple to this new campus.

The proposed site is in close proximity to a California gnatcatcher habitat restoration area and is part of a Los Angeles County designated Significant Ecological Area. The development is located at an important pinch point in the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor. It poses a real threat to the viability to the Corridor itself. The development as proposed would also sever the Skyline Trail - a popular hiking and equestrian venue.

Although no formal action has been taken by the Hsi Lai Temple with any county, state, or federal agencies, this development warrants watching. It would have a significant negative impact on the western section of the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor.
